On Sunday, 7 June 2026, participants gathered in Giessen for an outdoor screening of the Oscar-winning Ukrainian documentary 20 Days in Mariupol as part of the A Million Voices project.

The event brought together people from different cultural and national backgrounds to enjoy snacks and refreshments before watching the powerful documentary, which provides a firsthand account of the first weeks of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the siege of Mariupol.

Reflection Through Storytelling

The film offered participants an opportunity to better understand the experiences of civilians and journalists living through one of the most difficult periods of the war. Through personal stories and firsthand footage, the documentary highlighted the human impact of conflict, displacement, and resilience.

Meaningful Dialogue

Following the screening, participants took part in an open discussion, sharing their reflections on the film and exchanging perspectives on themes such as resilience, empathy, media representation, and the importance of preserving personal stories during times of crisis.

Many expressed appreciation for the opportunity to learn more about the realities behind the headlines and to hear different viewpoints in a respectful and supportive setting.

Building Connections Through A Million Voices

The outdoor format helped create an inclusive atmosphere that encouraged interaction and meaningful dialogue. The event strengthened connections between Ukrainian participants and local community members while demonstrating how shared cultural experiences can bring people together.

Through activities like this, the A Million Voices project continues to promote social cohesion, intercultural dialogue, and meaningful connections through the power of storytelling and shared experiences.

We would like to thank everyone who joined us in Giessen and contributed to this thoughtful and inspiring evening.
