As part of the A Million Voices project, we continue to explore ways of creating safe and supportive spaces where people can pause, breathe, and reconnect with themselves and members of the community.

One of these moments of peace was created through a gong therapy session in a yoga studio in Giessen.

The space involved soft lighting, comfortable mats, pillows, and warm blankets, where participants were welcomed to lay down and settle into stillness

After a short introduction, the practitioner began playing the gongs. Deep, resonant sounds filled the room, shifting gradually in tone and intensity. The vibrations moved through the space, guiding participants into a deeply relaxed, meditative state.

Holding Space for Stress and Transition

Participants came to the session with different needs, but many were hoping for relief from stress and emotional tension present in daily life.

Several participants from Ukraine shared that living in Germany has brought its own challenges in adjusting to a new environment, carrying uncertainty, and navigating ongoing emotional strain.

For them, gong therapy offered a non-verbal, accessible form of support. Through sound and vibration, participants were able to release tension without needing to explain or articulate their experiences. By the end of the session, many described feeling calmer, more grounded, and mentally clearer, noticing a sense of inner stability they hadn’t felt in a while.

Moments That Stayed With Us

What made this session especially meaningful were the small details:

A calm, thoughtfully prepared environment that encouraged trust and relaxation

Physical comfort that allowed participants to fully engage with the experience

Gong sounds that supported mindfulness, emotional release, and deep rest

A shared space that acknowledged migration-related stress with care and sensitivity

At the end of the session, participants were invited to explore the instruments themselves.

Building Connections Beyond the Session

As participants stayed afterward, their discussions of the experience connected with one another, exchanging contacts and forming new acquaintances. These moments of connection reflected one of the core values of A Million Voices: creating spaces where people not only feel supported individually, but also feel less alone.

What Comes Next

The response to the gong therapy session was rather positive. Many participants expressed interest in continuing and asked about future events.

In response, we are planning a follow-up meditation session titled Inner VoiceĀ will take place at the same venue. This next gathering will build on the experience of sound-based relaxation, offering adapted techniques focused on self-awareness, emotional well-being, and inner listening.

Reflections from This Experience

Sound-based meditation proved to be a meaningful tool for stress reduction, especially for those navigating life transitions or displacement. It also reaffirmed how essential safe, welcoming environments are, and how shared experiences can open the door to connection, trust, and healing.

Within A Million Voices, moments like these matter. They remind us that sometimes, being heard requires merely the space, presence, and the courage to listen.
