Our BikeAgriTourism project officially began with a three-day long kick-off meeting on the beautiful Greek island of Patmos. This initiative brings together partners from Greece (the municipality of Patmos), and Italy (Igor Vitale International) to explore how cycling and agritourism can support sustainable rural development.

Hosted by the Municipality of Patmos and coordinated locally by project manager Efi Anastasopoulou, the meeting welcomed partners including Igor Vitale from Italy and the Mayor of Patmos, Nikitas Tsampalakis. Over three days, our teams exchanged ideas and discussed how bicycles can help promote sustainable mobility in rural and island environments.

Promoting Sustainable Tourism Through Cycling

The BikeAgriTourism project aims to encourage the use of bicycles as a sustainable mobility solution in rural areas while raising awareness of their positive impact on local development and environmental protection. Agritourism combines agriculture with tourism experiences such as farm visits and local food production.

The island of Patmos offers rich agricultural traditions and cultural heritage but faces challenges during the high tourist season when heavy car traffic can overcrowd its narrow roads. Promoting cycling could help reduce congestion while allowing visitors to explore farms, villages, and cultural sites more sustainably.

Community Engagement and Local Activities

Despite difficult weather conditions delaying travel, our project partners continued their collaboration and followed the island’s local activities remotely from Athens. One highlight was the official public announcement of the project, accompanied by a bike tour for children held in front of the island’s Cultural Center. Families, farmers, business owners, and visitors joined the event, demonstrating strong community interest in sustainable mobility.

The following day, our formal kick-off meeting took place at the island’s Cultural Center, where more than 40 community members attended. After a welcome from Mayor Tsampalakis, our partners presented the project’s objectives, timeline, and upcoming activities. An open discussion allowed local residents to share their expectations and concerns, helping to shape the project’s outcomes.

Discovering Patmos’ Cultural and Agricultural Heritage

A guided visit to the historic Monastery of Saint John the Theologian offered our partners insight into Patmos’ rich spiritual heritage.

We also visited the iconic Windmills of Patmos. One windmill operates as a museum dedicated to traditional agricultural practices such as wheat grinding, while another generates electricity from wind power. Plans for the third windmill include water pumping, demonstrating how heritage sites can connect tradition with modern sustainability. The restoration project received recognition from Europa Nostra in 2012 for its contribution to cultural preservation.

Our visit continued with a stop at a local Slow Food farm, where participants learned about traditional animal-raising practices, regional wine varieties, and community initiatives promoting sustainable agriculture. The tour was led by farmer Dorian Amar, who shared insights into the island’s local food culture and environmental values.

Looking Ahead

The BikeAgriTourism kick-off meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration between local communities, municipalities, and our international partners. By combining cycling, agritourism, and cultural heritage, the project aims to create new sustainable tourism opportunities while preserving the unique identity of Patmos.

The journey has just begun, but the enthusiasm and engagement from the local community promise a bright future for sustainable mobility and rural tourism on the island.
