On November 30th, the first Painting Workshop of the A Million Voices project took place in Gießen, gathering 17 participants for an afternoon of creativity, cultural reflection, and connection.

As part of the wider initiative to support the mental health and social integration of Ukrainian refugees in the EU, this workshop offered a safe and inspiring space for participants to explore identity, emotion, and resilience through art.

Creating Together: A Supportive Space for Expression

The 2.5 hour session began with a welcome and a short introduction to the workshop’s theme: exploring Ukrainian culture and personal symbols of home, strength, and continuity.

After a brief painting demonstration, participants were invited to let their reflections guide their artistic process.

The atmosphere was one of openness and connection. Participants shared stories, exchanged ideas, and encouraged one another, creating a lively yet comforting environment where everyone felt free to experiment and express themselves.

Art as a Pathway to Meaning and Belonging

Many of the finished and in-progress artworks featured traditional Ukrainian ornaments, floral patterns, protective motifs, and imaginative symbols of hope and resilience. These visual elements provided a connection between cultural memory and personal emotion.

By the end of the workshop, participants shared their pieces with the group, reflecting on how painting helped them relax, express feelings, and find a moment of peace. Several noted how meaningful it was to meet others with similar experiences, and how the creative process encouraged conversation, understanding, and mutual support.
