Over the past months, A Million Voices has grown into something far beyond a series of events. What began as an idea to create space for expression, belonging, and cultural exchange has now unfolded into a vibrant journey shaped by stories, creativity, and community. Each gathering added a new layer, a new voice, a new way of connecting. Let us recap the successful events that brought our community together!

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Partnered between EUth Wonders, AY Institute, and Global Connect, "A Million Voices" is a project that aims to improve the mental health and social integration of Ukrainian refugees in the EU through innovative art and narrative therapy. The project will be implemented in the three partner countries: Germany, Lithuania, and Poland, focusing on empowering refugees and fostering social cohesion with local communities.

Through interviews, interactive community events (as described in this post), and a documentary, A Million Voices aims to:

  • Enhance mental well-being of Ukrainian refugees

  • Strengthen social bonds between refugees and local communities

  • Empower participants through skill development in art and storytelling

  • Raise public awareness and influence policies on refugee integration

BEGINNING WITH FOOD AND FAMILIARITY

We started with something deeply universal: food. At our Cultural Dinner in Giessen, participants came together to share traditional dishes, stories from home, and pieces of their identity. This first event was all about remembering, sharing, and building trust across cultures.

From there, we moved into creative expression.

EXPLORING IDENTITY THROUGH ART

Our painting workshops invited participants to explore identity through art in the form of colors, symbols, and personal narratives. These sessions created a quiet but powerful space for reflection, especially for those navigating displacement and change.

Over time, it became clear that these painting workshops were important spaces for participants where art became a bridge between inner experience and shared storytelling.

STORIES IN COMMUNITY

With our first storytelling picnic, we gathered in a relaxed, open environment where stories could unfold naturally. Sitting together, sharing food, and listening to one another transformed simple moments into meaningful exchanges.

We later expanded on this with a dedicated storytelling event, where art and narrative intertwined, allowing participants to express experiences that are often difficult to put into words.

CULTURE THROUGH MUSIC AND MOVEMENT

Music and dance brought a new kind of energy. Our Ukrainian karaoke evening filled the space with familiar songs, nostalgia, and joy. Singing together became a way of reconnecting with culture, with memories, and with each other.

Then, during our Ukrainian wedding dance night, participants experienced culture through movement by learning traditional dances and discovering how connection can happen without words.

CINEMA AS A SHARED EXPERIENCE

With a screening of Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, we introduced film as a storytelling medium, which opened up conversations about history, identity, and cultural heritage.

It created a collective moment of reflection, where participants could engage with Ukrainian culture through a different lens.

CREATING SPACE FOR INNER CONNECTION

As the project evolved, we began exploring the concept of the inner experience. Our gong therapy session offered participants a rare opportunity to pause, rest, and reconnect with themselves. In a world that often demands constant movement, this became a powerful space for stillness.

We continued this journey inward with the Inner Voice workshop, where participants explored sound, breath, and self-expression. Through guided exercises, they were encouraged to find and trust their own voice, both literally and metaphorically.

TAKEAWAYS

Looking back, each event had a different format: dinner, workshop, performance, or reflection. However, they all shared a common purpose: to create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and connected.

A Million Voices made unforgettable accomplishments for both the Ukrainian community and the broader multicultural community that supported the events:

  • rebuilt a sense of belonging

  • created bridges between cultures

  • offered tools for expression and healing

  • and reminded people that their voice matters

Thank you to everyone who was a part of these impactful events for A Million Voices. We hope to see you all again in the future at our upcoming events!
