Bike Agritourism in Bonn - Our Adventure

As part of our ongoing BikeAgriTourism project, we hosted a successful cycling trip with a group of 20 international participants from around the Bonn area to explore the rural areas just outside of the city.

Our route began at Popplesdorfer Allee and went uphill through the Kottenforst before arriving at Obsthof Cremarius, where we enjoyed a coffee and cake break with views over the surrounding orchards.

Our tour continued into the apple orchards of Meckenheim, where we picked apples together and learned more about local agricultural practices.

Farmers explained how delicate apple blossoms are protected from frost damage in early spring by spraying them with water, which then freezes into a thin layer of ice, an unexpected yet effective method to insulate the blossoms from below-freezing temperatures.

With over 2 total hours of cycling (mostly uphill,) this ride was quite the accomplishment for our diverse group and a great way to explore the forest paths together and learn more about local agriculture (and have some tasty apples!)

The ride forms part of the BikeAgriTourism project, an Erasmus+ initiative coordinated by the German National Agency Bibb. The project connects agritourism with cycling routes to promote sustainable tourism, providing training, digital courses, and tailored itineraries for operators, trainers, and tourists.

Through this activity, participants not only engaged in sustainable travel but also experienced firsthand the link between local food heritage and eco-friendly mobility.
