From CINEMATOMEDIA to Film School: Louis Wiers Takes the Next Step 🎥

For us, one of the most meaningful signs that a project has made an impact is when the experience continues to shape a participant’s life long after the activities themselves have ended.

For Louis Wiers, that impact has led to an exciting next step: studying film at University of the Arts London (UAL).

Louis is joining the BA (Hons) Film and Television programme at London College of Communication (LCC), part of UAL, where he will continue developing his creative, technical and production skills in filmmaking.

The programme focuses strongly on hands-on film and television production, giving students experience across different areas of the screen industries.

Learning by Making

Through our CINEMATOMEDIA project, Louis had the opportunity to explore film as a way to communicate ideas, tell stories and engage with social and democratic issues.

CINEMATOMEDIA was built around this idea. The project combined film screenings, discussions, seminars and practical filmmaking, supporting young people in moving from the role of spectator to creator.

Participants were encouraged to use cinema as a tool for expression while exploring topics connected to democracy, freedom, equality and social responsibility.

For Louis, that meant actually getting behind the camera and helping turn ideas into finished films.

During the project, he was involved in the creation of two short films.

We Helped Back Then, created by Louis together with Hazuki Fukuda, uses a poetic and surreal approach to explore German memory culture and Palestinian history.

He also worked alongside Guillermo Arce, Charlotte Monsuier and Hazuki Fukuda on Truth Needs a Voice, a short film centred on climate change, media, awareness and the decision to take action.

Both films were developed as part of CINEMATOMEDIA and later included in the project’s Short Film Festival in Bonn, where films created through the project were shared with a wider audience.

From a Youth Project to the Next Step

Producing films through CINEMATOMEDIA gave Louis something that is difficult to gain from theory alone: the experience of actually making something.

Developing an idea, collaborating with others, making creative decisions, working through the realities of production and ultimately seeing a finished film presented to an audience allowed him to build practical filmmaking skills and experience.

Those experiences directly supported his next step into formal film education.

Louis will now have the opportunity to build on that foundation at London College of Communication, where the BA (Hons) Film and Television programme includes practical work in film and television production and prepares students for areas including production, editing, screenwriting, camera and lighting, sound and other parts of the screen industries.

For EUth Wonders, his journey is also a reminder of why projects like CINEMATOMEDIA matter.

Youth projects do not always need to produce an immediate, measurable transformation. Sometimes their impact is giving someone a space to try something for the first time, discover that they are good at it, build confidence through practice and realise that an interest could become something more.

In Louis’s case, a project that invited young people to experiment with filmmaking became part of the path toward studying it professionally.

What Comes After the Project

CINEMATOMEDIA officially ran from October 2023 to October 2025, bringing together partners from Europe and the Middle East to explore how cinema and filmmaking can strengthen democratic awareness, dialogue and expression among young people.

However, the impacts of this project continue in the skills participants take with them, the ideas they pursue afterwards, and the opportunities they feel ready to take on.

For Louis, the next chapter is London.

We are incredibly happy to see him taking the filmmaking experience he developed through CINEMATOMEDIA and carrying it forward into his studies at UAL, and we are excited to see what he creates next.
