Beyond the Taboo

Beyond the Taboo is an Erasmus+ Youth Exchange that brings together 37 young people from Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Albania, Tunisia, and Hungary to explore topics that are often surrounded by stigma, misinformation, or silence: sexual health, relationships, consent, gender identity, body awareness, and emotional well-being. Hosted in Bonn, Germany, the project creates a safe and inclusive space where participants can learn from one another, challenge stereotypes, and engage in open, respectful dialogue through non-formal education methods.

By combining intercultural exchange with interactive learning, the project empowers young people to become informed, confident, and compassionate advocates for healthy relationships, inclusion, and body autonomy within their own communities.

Project Objectives
  • Empower young people with accurate and accessible knowledge about sexual health, relationships, consent, gender identity, and personal well-being.

  • Break down taboos, stigma, and misinformation surrounding sexuality and reproductive health.

  • Promote inclusive attitudes that respect diverse identities, backgrounds, experiences, and cultures.

  • Strengthen participants' confidence in discussing sensitive topics openly and respectfully.

  • Encourage critical thinking about social norms, stereotypes, media influence, and cultural perspectives related to sexuality.

  • Foster body autonomy, self-awareness, healthy boundaries, and mutual respect.

  • Equip participants to become multipliers who can share knowledge and facilitate discussions within their local communities.

Project Activities

Throughout the exchange, participants will engage in a variety of interactive workshops, discussions, and experiential learning activities, including:

  • Safe-space creation and trust-building activities.

  • Workshops on sex positivity, consent, communication, and healthy relationships.

  • Sessions exploring body functions, pregnancy, contraception, and STI prevention.

  • Discussions on gender identity, sexual orientation, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Intercultural dialogue exploring how different societies approach sexuality and relationships.

  • Peer-led workshops designed and facilitated by participants themselves.

  • Myth-busting games, debates, and critical thinking exercises to challenge misconceptions.

  • Cultural evenings celebrating the diversity of participating countries.

  • Daily reflection groups and creative evaluation activities.

  • Group presentations sharing key learning outcomes with the local community.

  • Follow-up planning sessions where participants design local "Myths vs Facts" awareness activities to implement after returning home

iMPACT

Beyond the Taboo aims to create lasting personal, community, and organizational impact.

For Participants

Participants will gain:

  • Increased knowledge of sexual health, consent, relationships, and gender diversity.

  • Greater confidence discussing topics often considered difficult or taboo.

  • Stronger communication, empathy, and intercultural dialogue skills.

  • Improved critical thinking regarding media, societal expectations, and misinformation.

  • A deeper understanding of body autonomy, personal boundaries, and respectful relationships.

For Communities

Participants will return home as ambassadors of positive change, sharing their learning through local workshops, discussions, and awareness-raising activities. This creates a multiplier effect that extends the project's impact far beyond the exchange itself.

For Partner Organizations

The project strengthens the capacity of participating organizations to address sensitive topics through innovative non-formal education methods. It also expands international cooperation, creates new opportunities for future collaboration, and provides educational resources that can continue to be used long after the project concludes.

Ultimately, Beyond the Taboo seeks to normalize honest, respectful, and inclusive conversations about sexuality and relationships, ensuring that young people feel informed, supported, and empowered rather than ashamed to ask questions or seek guidance
